Wesley Monumental History

Wesley Monumental Church is a monument to John and Charles Wesley, the founders of Methodism. Methodists all around the world contributed funds to build the church. It is said to belong to ALL Methodists.

The Sanctuary is patterned after Queen's Kirk in Amsterdam, Holland. The building and spires are Gothic style architecture. The Sanctuary seats 750 people. This was quite optimistic for the size of the congregation 150 years ago. Due to financial woes during Reconstruction and coupled with the catastrophic yellow fever epidemic, construction slowed. The church took 15 years for full completion. The Sanctuary is 43 feet high with two spires that are 136 and 196 feet tall. The Wesley Window in the rear balcony shows life-size busts of John and Charles Wesley. The top of the window bears a globe with John Wesley's famous words, "The World is my parish."

The Sanctuary houses a custom-built and installed organ built by Fritz Noack, a German immigrant, residing in Georgetown, Massachusetts. The organ cost $450,000 in 1985. The funds were pledged by the congregation in one week's time. Wesley Monumental's congregation has always valued great music as a part of worship.
