Residence and Work permit in France

Posted in France forum

My wife got a job offer in France and decided to take it. Of course I wanna go with her and now have some questions concerning permits in France.
How can I get a work permit??
And do I automatically get a residence permit, too, if my wife is working there??

Would be thankful for any advice!!

I am from Mexico City and I've always wanted to live and work in France, I lived in Chicago since 1999 and I just came back to Mexico this year.
Can anyone please tell me how I can make this dream come true?
I am 37, skilled sound and recording engineer by profession, guitar player and singer, Blues is my style.
I'm a pretty good carpenter on the side, I'm pretty fluid on English and Spanish, some French too.
    I'd appreciate any feed back!
    Thanks in advance!

    Hi Charlotte
I am Indian working in France and i have CDI contract here. I'm getting married next month i have plans to bring my wife(Indian) after marriage to France.
I have asked my Travel agent, they told me to bring in Long Term visitor visa.
They said the process would take 1 month to get Visa. I am little concerned about the 1 month process time.
I may not get 30 days leave to take her with me after marriage.
as my wife never been to any Foreign Countries i don't want to make her travel alone.

Shall i apply for Visitor Visa (short stay) and after reaching France
can we have option of applying Long Term Visitor visa in Indian Embassy,Paris ?

Which Visa i can apply for? what is the normal processing time to get Visa?

Many Thanks in advance for you reply,

    Dear Charlotte,
I need your help. I am an Australian who would like to work in an International School ( I have experience of doing a non-paid internship in one school) in Paris so that I can live with my french partner. Is there anyway that I can get a work permit without having to have an employer sign my work permit forms? Or any other way I can enter France that will allow me to work? All of the international schools require me to already have a work permit, even though they need to sign it for me so I can get one.

    Thank you.

Hi, Charlotte, I have a complicated situation. Im an American living in a small city in the French Alps, married to a French citizen for 18 months. There are no jobs in my small city for me for a number of reasons: my French language is elementary; even menial jobs require 'diplomas'; I need a significant amount of money to live (more than the average low level salary in France) due to property investment issues in the US; the industry Ive spent 30 years in (grant writing and fundraising for nonprofits) doesnt exist in France; and I dont have qualifications to teach English and there are almost no jobs for that here. In 2012, I will be applying for my 10 Year Carte de Sejour. The Prefecture said that I had to pass an 'integration' test and an interview with the Mayor in French. Since there are no French classes that I can afford here, I work 12 hour days in English for some Los Angeles contracts, and I have some hearing issues, my French will never be better than survival, I'm afraid. Also, I dont see how I will pass the 'integration' test with all my work in the U.S., having to start being there 6 months a year to keep my contracts as of next year, and owning 5 properties there and nothing here. So my question is if I don't get my 10 Year Carte de Sejour what will happen? Will they make me leave the country immediately even though Im married to a French citizen? Just keep issuing me 1 Year Carte de Sejours? Only let me in France 3 months at a time on a tourist visa? I'm quite concerned since this issue could ultimately mean the end of my marriage. Thanks.

    Hi,

I am British/Australian. My partner is Australian and has residency/working rights through marriage to me. His prospective employer can't find official information in French to support what we know (and what Charlotte said here) about working in France. They're asking that he organise a carte de séjour before January so they can sign a contract with him.

Can you please point me to an official French site that says exactly this? That way I can show them what they need to know.

(I'm not having much luck finding it myself as my French is limited and I don't think I'm searching for the right keywords).

    My understanding is that:
    a) The carte de séjour is something which will make life easier for us, but is not required. It's also going to take a while to get (which will take too long).
    b) We can both live/work here without getting a carte de séjour.
    c) We need to declare residency within 3 months (not the same as getting a carte de séjour).
    e) Essentially, he has the same working rights as I do, which is the same rights as any EU national, which is the same as any French person in France. So, he should just be able to sign a contract now with no fuss. Right?

    Thanks in advance!

    Ange.
